This bamboo basket & aluminium pot are the traditional tools used in Cambodia to cook sticky rice.
To make sticky rice at home using traditional methods, follow these easy instructions:
- The night before you intend to cook the sticky rice, soak the bamboo basket in water until use. This is to prevent the sticky rice from sticking too much to the basket. When cooking the rice you may also use moistened cheese cloth between the basket & rice to prevent rice sticking to the basket. We cannot emphasize this step enough.
- Once the basket is soaking, place the grains of 'sticky rice' in a large bowl & soak in cold water overnight. Make sure all the grains of rice are completely submerged in water.
- The next day, drain the water from the rice. Place at least four inches of water in the pot & bring to a vigorous boil on high heat.
- Carefully place the damp bamboo basket on top of the aluminium pot, then add the sticky rice into the basket. Cover the rice using a thoroughly wet towel or moistened cheesecloth.
- Depending on how much rice you’re cooking, cooking time will vary from 20 minutes to as long as nearly an hour.
- Allow the sticky rice to cool for a few minutes before serving & removing all left over cooked rice from the basket.
